Revamped Monseigneur-Charbonneau Square officially inaugurated today

Montreal, June 16, 2005 - Today marked the official inauguration of the entirely redesigned Monseigneur-Charbonneau Square. The prestigious Montreal public square borders University Street, facing 1 Place Ville Marie, at the corner of René-Lévesque Boulevard.

In addition to getting a complete makeover, the square has been expanded from 7,275 square feet (675 square metres) to 12,955 square feet (1,203 square metres). The $970,000 project was funded by SITQ, which owns and operates Place Ville Marie.

Place Ville Marie Building Manager Carole Arbour told the crowd “the final outcome is exactly what we expected: a quality green space Montrealers, tourists, Place Ville Marie tenants, visitors and occupants will be able to enjoy for many years.”

Over the course of 8 weeks, the firm Terramex installed new streetscape furnishings, along with 23 honey locust trees and other shrubs and plants that will provide vegetation year round. Granite blocks and concrete paving stones supply the backdrop for an overall appearance reflecting that of Square Victoria. The other firms that worked on the project were Groupe Cardinal-Hardy (landscape architects) and Teknika (electrical and mechanical engineers).
